Gary Justis at the Visual Art Center of UT Austin
The exhibition "New Prints 2011/Autumn", organized by IPCNY and previously on view at their New York gallery,
has opened at the Visual Arts Center at the University of Texas at Austin. "Untitled (modern) 7", one of Gary
Justis' chandelier monoprints published by Manneken Press in 2011, is in the exhibition which will run from
1/27/12 - 3/10/12.

Manneken Press at the Baltimore Contemporary Print Fair 2012:

 


Manneken Press will be exhibiting at The Baltimore Contemporary Print Fair this coming spring. This biennial art fair
sposored by the Baltimore Museum of Art will run from April 27 - 29, 2012 at the BMA. Stay tuned for updates.

The Texas Contemporary Art Fair took place in Houston, October 20th - 23rd. Manneken Press' brand new project, the "Array 1000" woodcuts by Rupert Deese, and Gary Justis' recent monoprints garnered a lot of interest, Tom Orr's "Waterfall" prints dazzled, while work by Carlos Andrade, Sarah Smelser and Jonathan Higgins turned heads. It was a successful and fun event and we will hopefully return again in 2012.

Philip Van Keuren at the IPA Gallery/Islensk Grafik

"Philip Van Keuren: Things", an exhibition of 20 copperplate photogravures will be on view at IPA Gallery,
the exhibition space of the Icelandic Printmakers Association, In Reykjavik. Van Keuren has been working
with master printer Jonathan Higgins at Maneken Press since 2008 on an ongoing series of photogravures
from his archive of photographic negatives.

"Untitled (modern) 7", one of Gary Justis' recent chandelier monoprints published by Manneken Press in 2011, is in an exhibition at the IPCNY. The show then travels to the Visual Arts Center at UT Austin where it will be on view from 1/27/12 - 3/10/12.

Rupert Deese benefit print for Chinati Foundation
Rupert Deese has created a print to benefit the Chinati Foundation: Aphros, a drypoint printed in an edition of 100 from several plates, was printed at Manneken Press in January - May, 2011. Available through the Chinati Foundation.

Sarah Smelser @ the MCAC and Heavy Brow Gallery
Sarah Smelser ruled Bloomington, IL, artistically at least, during Summer 2011 with exhibitions in two different venues:
At the McLean County Arts Center, recent monotypes (with Marilee Salvator) through July 23rd; and at

Heavy Brow Gallery,an exhibition of smaller works with LJ Douglas titled Niche, through May 27th.
Heavy Brow, incidentally, is the world's skinniest gallery.
Several of Smelser's most recent prints were also shown at the NEXT art fair in Chicago.

Our booth at NEXT this year featured the "recent"- Ted Kincaid's Nest etchings, the "new"- Carlos Andrade's monotypes and Jonathen Higgins' lithographs, and the "so new the ink was barely dry"- Gary Justis' chandelier monoprints, Rupert Deese's Helices drypoints, and Sarah Smelser's monotypes.

Manneken Press @ NEXT 2011:

We returned to Chicago for NEXT: The Invitational Exhibition of Emerging Art at the Merchandise Mart, where we
presented very new prints by artists Gary Justis, Carlos Andrade, Rupert Deese, Sarah Smelser and Ted Kincaid.

We had a great response to the work we presented at NEXT in 2010 and are expecting more of the same this year.

Carlos Andrade at the US State Department

 

An untitled monotype from 2009 by Carlos Andrade is included in an exhibition of artworks on paper that incorporate collage
and/or assemblage at the US State Department's Art Bank Gallery. The show, titled "Piece By Piece", features nineteen
contemporary artworks by prominent artists that incorporate collage techniques. Andrade's print, with it's layers of printed
information and collaged fabric, fits the theme nicely. Andrade's print was acquired by the State Department in 2010.

"Linear Thinking" at Marty Walker Gallery

Manneken Press has long had a strong relationship with Texas artists. For print lovers (and Manneken Press enthuisasts) in the Dallas area this exhibition is a must. Featuring recent prints by artists Ted Kincaid, Tom Orr and Jay Shinn, all of whom are seriously committed to prints, many of the works in the show were published by and/or produced at Manneken Press.
The exhibition dates are 2/19/11 - 3/19/11 with an opening reception on 2/19, 6 - 8 pm.

Work in progress @ Manneken Press :

Rupert Deese returned to Manneken Press in January to work on several new drypoints commissioned by the Chinati Foundation. These prints will be completed in the spring of 2011.

New prints are underway with Bloomington, IL sculptor GaryJustis, using images of chandeliers cut with a torch from aluminum and stainless steel plates.

Painter Shona Macdonald will be at Manneken Press working on several etchings this spring.



Sarah Smelser at the Quincy Art Center :


Sarah Smelser's recent monotypes are the subject of a 2-person exhibition at the Quincy Art Center, a museum in the historic
Mississippi River city of Quincy, IL. The exhibition runs through March 13th, 2011.

Manneken Press was selected to create an edition of an image by artist Ted Kincaid for the Dallas Contemporary Print
Program. The print, a photogravure of one of Kincaid's digitally created seascapes, was printed in an edition of 100 and
is available from the Dallas Contemporary.

Recent prints by Jonathan Higgins and Sarah Smelser were included in the inaugural exhibition of a new art space in Madison, WI: The Midwest Clay Project is a center for ceramic art including a gallery which shows ceramics and more.

New Carlos Andrade monotypes:

Following up after the success of his 2009 monotypes Carlos Andrade returned to Manneken Press in late October, 2010 to
produce 32 new monotypes. In many of his new prints Andrade incorporates synthetic fabric chine colle' elements, and
abstract organic imagery. These new prints are now all documented and on the website. Call or email for a current
price/availability list.




Rupert Deese at Abecedarian Gallery:

Two works by Rupert Deese were included in a recent exhibition at Abecedarian Gallery in Denver, CO. "Works From Wood" featured prints and artist's books that utilized woodcut prints or wood engravings as a primary element. The exhibition ran from July 1st - August 7th 2010. Deese was represented by "The Orange", an artist's book with woodcuts by Deese and poems by Todd Young; and "Array 500/Orange", a woodcut.

The first week of October 2009 was filled with the amazing creative energy of New York artist Carlos Andrade
who worked 5 full
days on a series of monoprints. Andrade's unique approach and use of unorthodox
materials has resulted in an exciting group of prints.


   

Sarah Smelser solo exhibition at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, New York
"(Re)treat: New Works by Sarah Smelser" featured recent monotypes. The show ran from April 9 - May 30, 2009. This was
Smelser's 2nd solo exhibition at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts.

Rupert Deese at Odegard, Miami
Rupert Deese's Array 700 suite of five large woodcuts and the Pale suite of 4 etchings were featured in an exhibition at Odegard, in Miami's Design District. The exhibition opened on December 8th 2008, at the height of Art Basel Miami madness, and continued through February 19th 2009. Odegard's showroom displays fabulous rugs, furniture and accessories as well as contemporary art.

Ted Kincaid featured in Art On Paper Magazine
Nest 45, one of a suite of four photo-etchings by Ted Kincaid and published by Manneken Press, was featured as one of the
best new prints of 2008 in the 5th Annual Review of New Prints in the November/December issue of Art On Paper magazine.
Ted's print is featured, in all it's intricate glory, in a full page spread on page 61.

Manneken Press is going to Miami

Museum of Texas Tech University Acquires Ted Kincaid Prints

The Museum of Texas Tech University recently purchased five photogravure monoprints by Ted Kincaid for their permanent
collection. The prints were published in 2001 and 2003 by Manneken Press.

Full Circle: Recent Prints from Manneken Press, consisting of 40 prints and 3 artist's books by 8 artists was on view from
September 20 through November 4, 2007 at Loyola University's Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery, New Orleans, LA. The exhibition
included recent prints by Rupert Deese, Rhea Edge, Betty Friedman, Jonathan Higgins, Ted Kincaid, Jane McNichol, Claire
Lieberman and Sarah Smelser. The exhibition was previously shown at Humboldt State University's Reese Bullen Gallery,
Arcata, CA, from February 8 - March 10, 2007. A smaller version of the show, "Select Prints From Manneken Press" was
shown at Marty Walker Gallery, Dallas, TX from March 30 - May 5, 2007.

"The Orange" and Jeff Jamieson at David Patton Los Angeles

David Patton Los Angeles, a new gallery in L.A., celebrated the release of The Orange, an artist's book with poems by Todd
Young and woodcuts by Rupert Deese, during the opening reception for Jeff Jamieson's sculpture exhibition on 11/18/06.
Readings by the poet and the artist were given at the reception. The Orange, a joint project of Manneken Press and Denker
Press, is a soft cover book containing 9 poems by Young and 3 woodcuts by Deese. It was recently released in an edition of 50
and is available from both Manneken Press and David Patton Los Angeles.

Jonathan Higgins at the International Print Center New York

"Wavy Line", a new lithograph by Jonathan Higgins, was included in "New Prints 2000 - 2006", a benefit exhibition and silent auction celebrating the first six years of the IPCNY's New Prints Program. The exhibition ran from September 21 - October 18 2006 at IPCNY's gallery at 526 W. 26th Street, #824, New York, NY.


Sarah Smelser at Hudson Gallery and the Lux Center for the Arts

Collected Verses: Recent Monotypes by Sarah Smelser was shown at Hudson Gallery, Sylvania, OH, from November 3 - 30,
2006. In conjunction with the exhibition, Smelser was also a visiting artist at Bowling Green State University where she
worked with students, demonstrated her printmaking techniques, and gave a public lecture on her work. Smelser also
showed recent monotypes in a curated group exhibition at the Lux Center for the Arts, Lincoln, NE, July 7th - 29th 2006.


"Ted Kincaid: Ten Years" at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary in September and October, 2006

The McKinney Avenue Contemporary, a Dallas contemporary exhibition space, presented Ten Years, a retrospective exhibition of the art of Texas artist Ted Kincaid, curated by Charlie Wylie, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art. The exhibition dates were September 9 - October 13, 2006

The exhibition was comprised of over 40 pieces, including photogravures produced at Manneken Press, early toned black and white works, and his most recent series of large digital photographs. A catalog with an essay by Charlie Wylie is now
available through Manneken Press for $25.00.


 

Claire Lieberman at International Print Center New York, Chiaroscuro Gallery, the Maier Museum of Art, and the
Contemporary Art Gallery

Jell-O Grid 1, one of several color lino cuts produced recently at Manneken Press, was included in New Prints/Summer
2006
organized by the IPCNY. The show was at IPCNY's Chelsea exhibition space from June 29th - August 4th.
It then travelled to the Maier Museum of Art, Lynchburg, VA, where it was on view from September 16th - December 8th, 2006.
The show was part of the IPCNY's ongoing New Prints Program exhibition series, which highlight outstanding
contemporary prints from fine art presses across the globe.

Hot Pink Desert, a solo exhibition of Lieberman's sculpture and prints, was seen at Chiaroscuro Gallery, Scottsdale, AZ,
from April 20th - May 27th 2006.

Cool Desert, Hot Water: Prints and Sculpture by Claire Lieberman was shown at Southeastern Louisiana University's
Contemporary Art Gallery July 31st - August 28th 2006.



Higgins and Smelser at Kala Art Institute

Jonathan Higgins and Sarah Smelser were Artists In Residence at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA, during June and July 2006.

Deese and Higgins at Columbia College Chicago

New Prints/Autumn 2005 , an exhibition organized by the International Print Center New York, was shown at A + D
Gallery, Columbia College, Chicago. IL January 12 - February 18 2006. Jonathan Higgins was one panelist for a panel
discussion titled "A New Print Renaissance" which took place at the gallery on January 26th. Rupert Deese's Array 700/Pink,
one of a suite of recent woodcuts published by Manneken Press, was included in the show. The print, "in a shameless
shade of pink", was reproduced on the announcement for the exhibition as well as in advertisements in the January
issues of Artforum and Art On Paper magazines.

 

 

New studio location for Manneken Press

Manneken Press starts off 2006 in a new space. Our second floor loft in an Art Deco building, a former Coca Cola bottling plant just a mile from our old location, provides much needed additional space. Our new mailing address: 1106 E. Bell Street, Bloomington, IL 61701

"Extract", a solo show of recent monotypes by Sarah Smelser, was shown at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, New York, NY from
January 5th - February 11th, 2006. A reception for the artist was held on February 9th, 6 - 8 pm.

 

 

 

Manneken Press 5 year survey at Wakeley Gallery

Manneken Press at Five Years, a survey of prints produced at Manneken Press since 2000, was shown at the Wakeley Gallery, Illinois Wesleyan University, in Bloomington, IL from November 8 - December 8, 2005. The exhibition included the prints of seven artists who have worked at Manneken Press: Rupert Deese, Betty Friedman, Jonathan Higgins, Ted Kincaid, Claire Lieberman, Jane McNichol, and Sarah Smelser.

Jane McNichol @ Manneken Press

Artist Jane McNichol was in residence at Manneken Press in October 2005, completing 25 new monotypes. These were McNichol's first monotypes since her last stint at Manneken Press in 2001. The 2005 prints include landscapes and still lifes. McNichol, who lives and works in New York City, was recently awarded a prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant.

Array 700/Pink, one of a suite of five new woodcuts by Rupert Deese published by Manneken Press, was selected for
inclusion in New Prints/Autumn 2005 at the IPCNY. The print, "in a shameless shade of pink", was reproduced on the
announcement for the exhibition. The show was seen at IPCNY's Chelsea exhibition space in December, 2005. The show
traveled to A + D Gallery, Columbia College, Chicago, IL where it ran from January 12 - February 18 2006. The show is
part of the IPCNY's ongoing New Prints Program which highlights outstanding contemporary prints from fine art presses
across the globe
